Top Seven Bathroom Design Trends for 2012

By
Jo Koenig

Spring is the season to take note of remodeling trends and this year we’re seeing an exciting mixture of luxury and functionality. The wide variety of options makes it possible to satisfy every need and budget.

1) Natural color still inspires.
The earth and sky will continue to inspire home décor and paint colors in 2012. In terms of a color palette, think muted blues, moody grays, and saturated neutrals and greens with brownish undertones. You can also go a little bold with 2012’s flashiest color trend—Tangerine Tango, a vivacious, sophisticated reddish orange with a lot of depth.

2) Polished fixtures gleam.
Polished Chrome is a classic finish that coordinates beautifully with a wide variety of fixture styles and types of décor. Vibrant Polished Nickel is a sophisticated look that works well with both traditional and contemporary styles and can add warmth and elegance to a bathroom.

3) Tile does the trick.
What element can most transform a bathroom? We think it is a perfect combination of decorative and functional tile.  The profusion of tile materials and designs has fueled the popularity of tile showers, tile floors, and tile backsplashes.

4) Solid Surfaces rock.
Solid countertop surfaces have been extremely popular for quite some time. This year, solid surfaces are trending even stronger, impacting both the bathroom and kitchen.  The most popular countertop surfaces are #1 granite, #2 quartz, #3 marble, #4 solid surface (Corian, etc.), and the new and interesting #5 glass vanity tops.

5) Barrier free showers: no limitations.
At some point, many families experience a health event requiring adjustment to their daily routine. To prepare for such scenarios, forward-thinking homeowners now include a barrier free shower in their bathroom remodeling plans. With the many dual-purpose materials available, it is possible to marry functionality and aesthetic beauty in one great design.

6) Comforting warmth is hot.
Even the most skeptical become believers after experiencing the comfort of a heated bathroom floor. Heated tile floors are also practical because water evaporates quickly. A programmable thermostat keeps floors energy efficient.

7) Medicine cabinets are back.
Over the past several years, the tried-and-true medicine cabinet fell out of favor in bathroom remodels. However, medicine cabinets are making a comeback due in part to the stylish, space-saving models available. Medicine cabinets can be ordered with built-in lighting, night lights and even TV’s!
