Best Kitchen Trends: Visually Expand Your Space

By
Jo Koenig

One of the strongest continuing trends in kitchen design is to visually expand the existing space. Without dramatic changes to the floor plan, a kitchen can be transformed by this simple idea.

Connecting the kitchen with adjacent living spaces is a wonderful way to re-energize a home. Many older homes were built with the curious notion that kitchens (and cooks!) should be tucked away, unseen. Fortunately, that thinking has gone by the wayside and now homeowners are opening up living spaces to expand their lifestyle options.

See the dramatic difference after just one wall was removed from this kitchen area:

The challenge in this project was to retain essential load bearing columns. Our team created a way to incorporate beams and decorative columns as an integral part of the design, making the kitchen look like it was always meant to be this way.

Adjacent to both the kitchen and main entry is this small but inviting space. The homeowners enjoy having a transitional area to greet guests and say goodbyes at the end of a visit. This also provides a great spot to settle in with a cup of coffee and a good book.
