A Fresh + Functional Kitchen Refresh With a Custom Fireplace Transformation

Some remodels call for a complete overhaul—but others only need thoughtful, strategic updates to make the entire home feel brand-new. For this South Salem home, the goal was simple: refresh the existing kitchen footprint, modernize materials, and create a stunning new fireplace surround that would become the centerpiece of the space.

By keeping the original layout and cabinetry in place, the homeowners achieved a dramatic transformation while minimizing disruption and reducing overall project time.

Preserving What Works, Enhancing What Doesn’t

The existing kitchen already had great bones, so our team focused on eliminating outdated finishes and elevating the space with modern surfaces, better lighting, and refined details. We installed comprehensive dust and floor protection before beginning demo and carefully removed countertops, plumbing fixtures, appliances, and the dated hood cabinetry.

With the space opened up, we prepared for new appliances, boxed in framing for a fresh plaster-style hood, and made targeted drywall repairs around the areas affected by the updates.

A major part of this transformation centered around sleek, durable new surfaces. The homeowners selected Pental Prima quartz for the countertops featuring a polished, modern mitered edge and chose to carry this material all the way up the wall with a full-height quartz backsplash for a clean, cohesive look.

To complement the warm tones of the home, we installed champagne bronze plumbing fixtures.

We also upgraded lighting with new under-cabinet illumination and plug strip outlets discreetly tucked under the cabinetry to maintain a crisp backsplash without visual clutter.

Existing cabinetry was refreshed with new hardware—Top Knobs Exeter pulls and Oculus knobs in a honey bronze finish—to tie the entire palette together.

Added Functionality: A New Beverage Center

To support entertaining and improve day-to-day convenience, the remodel also included a new bar cabinetry area.

This addition improved storage, added counter space, and helped create a better flow between the kitchen and the adjoining living areas.

Updating the Existing Built-Ins

Rather than replace the built-in cabinetry, the homeowner chose to revitalize it. Our team prepped the wall, added floating shelves, and installed a new wood countertop. Shelves were painted and finished in-house, and the wood top received a custom stain to complement the new shelving.

A Fireplace That Became the Star of the Room

One of the most striking upgrades in this remodel happened beyond the kitchen: a fully redesigned fireplace wall.

The original fireplace insert and surround were removed, and the space was reframed for a new gas insert and a redesigned TV location above. Drywall was added, the hearth received a beautiful plaster finish, and a new Absolute Black Antiqued 3cm stone surround created a bold, modern statement.

The result is an architectural focal point visible from multiple rooms.
