Balancing Period Character with Modern Function

In the historic heart of Independence, a stunning renovation has recently been completed. At C&R Design Remodel, we believe that a home’s history is one of its best features. Our latest project was a full reconstruction of two bathrooms, meticulously designed to honor original character while radically improving daily function.

The Main Level Powder Room: A Detailed Restoration

The original powder room lacked a cohesive connection to the home’s overall potential. Our objective was to transform this guest bathroom into an intentional, high-end space that serves visitors with sophisticated style.

The main level half-bath was originally a relic of the past, featuring dated wallpaper and windows that didn’t quite fit the home’s potential. Our team executed a complete overhaul:

• Structural Refinement: We removed one of the existing windows to provide wall space for the new vanity mirror and lighting, and replaced the other window with a high-performance Anderson A-Series window.
• Plumbing Layout Improvements: We shifted the location of the toilet to provide more floor area and reduced the size of the vanity to be more fitting for a space intended for guest use.
• Vintage Vibes, Modern Metals: The showstopper is the Signature Hardware fireclay vessel sink paired with a Rohl Acqui wall-mount bridge faucet in a stunning Tuscan Brass finish.
• Premium Surface Details: The new vanity features a Venus quartz countertop with a custom milled backsplash and finished with a classic Ogee edge profile.
• Artisanal Flooring: The foundation is a Bedrosian Atrium honed marble blend mosaic with a custom border.
• Finishing Touches: The walls were smoothed and treated to a designer favorite: GP&J Baker “Ferns” wallpaper in Dove Grey/Silver, perfectly complemented by Quartersawn Oak cabinetry in a rich “Cacao” finish.

This powder room features a custom-milled quartz backsplash, a vessel sink, and a wall-mount bridge faucet in Tuscan Brass.

The Upstairs Hall Bath: Reclaiming the Layout

The second-story hall bath suffered from a cramped, inefficient footprint. We stripped the room to the studs to provide a completely new experience.

The Upstairs Hall Bath: Creating a Functional Modern Space

This allowed for a complete reconfiguration that prioritizes flow and modern amenities while maintaining a classic aesthetic.

• A Modern Walk-in Shower: We replaced the old tub with a spacious shower featuring a Schluter waterproof tile underlayment system, Daltile Palomino wall tiles, and a frameless glass enclosure.
• Double Vanity Utility: To accommodate the bathroom’s functionality, we replumbed for a double vanity featuring Kohler Caxton under-mount sinks and Pental Venus quartz countertops.
• Architectural Wainscoting: We installed beadboard paneling and a chair rail, finished in Sherwin Williams “Brewster Gray” to add to this home’s historic appeal.
• Aged Brass Lighting: The vanity is perfectly illuminated by Rose City double sconces in aged brass with opal bell shades.

This double vanity includes two undermount sinks, Pental Venus quartz countertops, and dual stepped metal frame mirrors in aged brass.

This transformation focused on integrating modern performance within a historic 19th-century framework. By utilizing a full reconstruction approach, we replaced aging infrastructure with high-efficiency plumbing and electrical systems. The finished spaces showcase a deliberate selection of materials. Every design choice and material selection provides lasting durability and a timeless aesthetic.
