There is something truly special about a home with history. We recently had the pleasure of partnering with a homeowner in Salem to update a main floor bathroom in their beautiful 1910 historic home.
The goal was clear: create a modern, functional space that felt entirely at home within the character of a century-old residence.
The Vision: Historic Charm Meets Modern Function
The client felt her original bathroom was ready for a new chapter. To honor the home’s roots while improving the daily experience, we transitioned the space from a “tub-only” setup to a versatile new tub and shower combination. Because our design philosophy focuses on long-term livability and visual appeal that never feels dated, we chose materials that look like they’ve always belonged there.

The Transformation: What Stayed and What Changed
At C&R, we offer multiple project scopes to fit a client’s specific needs. This project was a classic Pull & Replace Remodel. This means we provided a brand-new look while largely utilizing the existing layout and keeping the plumbing fixtures in their original locations.
The Showstopper:
We removed the original clawfoot soaking tub, but we didn’t replace it. Instead, the homeowner refinished the exterior coating in a stunning new color that ties in with the “spa blue” floor tile and reinstalled it as the centerpiece of the room.

Classic Surfaces:
Our team removed the old tile floor and installed a new custom inlay tile design to create a beautiful, high-end focal point. The homeowner selected their favorite color palette and our tile installer hand-placed each decorative piece.

Timeless Walls:
We installed classic subway tile around the entire perimeter of the bathroom up to the existing picture rail, ensuring a look that remains beautiful now and decades from now.

Sustainable Choices:
To maintain the home’s soul, we reused the existing medicine cabinetry, vanity pedestal sink and faucet.

The C&R Process: Efficiency and Care
Even with the detailed tile work and the tub restoration, our team completed the construction phase in just five weeks.
Because this was a main-floor project, we utilized our signature dust mitigation system, including HEPA air filtration and dust barriers, to ensure the rest of the home stayed clean and breathable throughout the five-week journey.
As with every C&R project, this remodel is backed by our two-year warranty, giving the homeowner total peace of mind.
The result is an elevated bathroom that honors the craftsmanship of 1910 while providing the lasting quality C&R has been known for since 1961.
