A Functional Reset for a 1960’s Classic

At C&R Design Remodel, we have been serving the Willamette Valley since 1961. The very same year this home was built. For this Full Reconstruction project, our goal was to respect the home’s mid-century roots while solving the functional challenges of a dated layout.

The Goal: Structural Expansion

The homeowners needed to enlarge the kitchen, transform a standard half-bath into a full bathroom, and create a more functional bedroom and laundry area. While the home had great bones, the existing floor plan was interrupted by a large masonry chimney in the dining area that limited the home’s potential.

The Project: Engineering New Space

Because this was a Full Reconstruction, our team didn’t just replace the finishes; we altered the footprint of the house:

Kitchen & Laundry: While the kitchen remained in its original spot, it received a total layout overhaul to maximize workspace. The laundry room received a refresh with new custom cabinetry and countertops.

Deconstruction: We removed the existing fireplace unit, wood mantel, brick surround, and the entire chimney stack to clear the way for a more open floor plan.

Bedroom & Closet Gains: To provide the extra room requested, we moved the bedroom wall and captured a portion of the garage area to significantly increase the closet size.

Bathroom Expansion: By reconfiguring the garage entry and bathroom walls, we were able to expand a simple half-bath into a full bathroom featuring a new custom tile shower.

Our design philosophy blends personal style with classic principles to create spaces that are beautiful now and decades from now. This project features a sophisticated mix of natural textures and modern durability that honors the home’s 1960s heritage:

Walnut Cabinetry: The kitchen and hallway feature DeWils Horizons Series Walnut cabinetry in a “Harvest Gold” finish. These vertical slab doors use “tip-on” hardware for a sleek, handle-free look reminiscent of mid-century design.

Modern Palette: For the laundry and bathroom, we installed DeWils Fenix “Verde Comodoro” cabinetry, providing a unique matte-green finish that is both durable and stylish.

Quartz Surfaces: All countertops in the kitchen, laundry, and bath are Cambria quartz in “White Cliff,” paired with a flat edge profile for a clean, architectural feel.

Detailed Tile Work: We installed 12×24 “Terrazo White” tile throughout the main floors. In the kitchen, a “Matte Stella Hexagon Deco” porcelain tile serves as the backsplash focal point.

The C&R Process in Action

From the initial consultation to the final cleanup, this project moved through our phased approach to stay on schedule. By utilizing our all-inclusive process, we managed every detail. From the structural changes to the installation of the every finishing touch, it’s all under one contract.

The construction phase was completed in 10 weeks, resulting in a home that is now highly functional and built to last.
